- Story Text: Latin Patriarch attends Holy Saturday ceremony.
Latin Patriarch Michel Sabbah attended the Holy
Saturday (March 26, 2005) procession at the Holy Sepulchre Church
in Jerusalem where it is believed Jesus was crucified and
buried hundreds of years ago.
Housing both the traditional site of Crucifixion and
the Tomb of the Resurrection, the Church of the Holy
Sepulchre has always been one of Christianity's most sacred
sites.
A chapel marks the spot where pilgrims recall that
Jesus was disrobed; a nearby altar gives pilgrims a place
to remember the horror of where He was nailed to the cross.
An ornate shrine stands above the rock on which many
believe Jesus was crucified.
Saturday's (March 26) ceremony was conducted in front
of the stone structure that represents the tomb of Jesus.
The fortress-like church, built by Emperor Constantine
in 330 A.D., marks the Biblical site of Calvary, a
skull-shaped hilltop where the crucifixion took place.
According to Christian belief, Jesus rose from the dead
three days later. The church is divided among various
Christian sects, including Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox
and Armenian. It houses Christian sects of all varieties
and has been destroyed and rebuilt many times though the
centuries.
Many worshippers make the pilgrimage to Jerusalem and
The Holy Sepulchre Church to visit the holy places and to
celebrate Easter Sunday (March 27).
