- Story Text: Fifth round of Aceh talks take place in Helsinki.
Indonesian government officials and Aceh
separatists are meeting for a fifth round of peace talks in
the Finnish capital, Helsinki.
After a marathon opening session of ten hours of
negotiations the Indonesian delegation arrived back late at
the residence of the Indonesian Ambassador in Helsinki on
Tuesday (July 12). The communications minister of
Indonesia, Sofyan Djalil was short in his comment:
"Everything is great but no further comment," he said.
The parties are to discuss a preliminary document for a
peace agreement, presented by former Finnish President and
career diplomat Martti Ahtisaari, who is mediating the
talks.
Free Aceh Movements spokesperson Abdullah Bakhtiar was
very pleased with the progress made in this first day of
talks.
"I think there is signs of openness and commitment to
achieve a peaceful solution in these peace talks. Because
we are only in the first session and amazingly we have
already gone true the whole draft of the memorandum of
understanding (MOU)," said Bakhtiar. "I think on GAM's
part we have made major concession for this peace process
to be successful and it now up to the Indonesian side to
show some goodwill some good faith and some sincerity in
proving there commitment to achieve a peaceful ,
sustainable solution for the post tsunami Aceh."
It is hoped a deal will be finally reached to end a
drawn-out conflict that has cost the lives of nearly 15,000
people.
