- Story Text: High temperatures continue in central Europe, forcing
animals and people to take any measures they can to
keep cool.
At the Frankfurt Zoo, sea lions played in the water
on Monday (August 4) while pelicans, bears and zebras
relaxed in the shade to escape the heatwave that is
gripp ing Europe.
The temperature is forecast to rise to 37 degrees
centigrade (99 degrees fahrenheit) on Monday, while
meteorologists expect an almost unheard-of 40 degrees
centigrade (104 fahrenheit) later this week. A high
pressure system over the North Sea is keeping the heat in
Germany, where the summer has been much hotter and drier
than usual and farmers fear their crops may be ruined.
Over the weekend, five people died of heat exhaustion
in northern Germany, and forest fires continue to rage in
southern Europe.
