(SOUNDBITE)(English) REPORTER, ASKING: "How did September 11th effect the IRA's decision to disarm." (SOUNDBITE) (English) SINN FEIN LEADER GERRY ADAMS, SAYING: "Well I think that all of us back in Ireland who have friends here in New York and I was indeed at Windows of the World two years ago at a Sinn Fein event and one of those who was part of organizing that event actually died in the explosion and I knew Father Michael Judge. So we saw on television screens what happened, we were moved by what happened, there was a national day of morning in Ireland and I think those in the media who have said that the IRA were pressurized by these events, missed the point. I think at a human level, at a humanitarian level, people knew that this was an awful thing that had occurred, they also knew that if the peace process back home wasn't anchored, that eventually it would slip back into conflict. So the IRA, I think, engaged in a patriotic action to save the peace process and I think, I don't think this was the IRA's view, but I think that in a way that those of us who live in Ireland who are involved in the peace process making it work in Ireland is part of our contribution to making peace work throughout the world." 1.39 3. - Story Text: Sinn Fein leader, Gerry Adams has spoken about the
pressure the September 11th attacks on the United States had
on the decision by the IRA to disarm.
Adams said the IRA acted to save the peace process and do
its part to promote peace throughout the world.
While in New York to help raise cash for families of
the victims of the September 11 terror attacks, Sinn Fein
leader, Gerry Adams, said the IRA acted to save the peace
process when it agreed to disarm.
He said that those who feel the IRA were pressurized into
a deal by the events of September 11, "missed the point". He
believes the IRA "acted patriotically" to help make the world
a more peaceful place.
"So the IRA, I think, engaged in a patriotic action to
save the peace process... I don't think this was the IRA's
view, but I think that in a way that those of us who live in
Ireland who are involved in the peace process making it work
in Ireland is part of our contribution to making peace work
throughout the world," added Adams.
Adams spoke to Reuters Television outside CNN's studios
in New York after appearing on the Larry King Live show.
