- Story Text: Iraqi Red Crescent Society sends humanitarian aid to
people of Falluja, in the hope that US forces will allow
them to enter the city.
The Iraqi Red Crescent Society on Saturday (November
13) sent humanitarian aid to families left in the city of
Falluja, which has been pummelled by sustained aerial
bombardment and artillery fire in recent days.
Earlier Iraqi Red Crescent Society urged U.S. forces
and the Iraqi government to let it deliver food, medicine
and water, as soon as possible, describing conditions in
Falluja as a disaster.
"Today a truck from the Iraqi Red Crescent is heading
to Falluja and we hope we will enter it. In addition to the
truck there is a medical team to help Iraqi civilians in
Falluja, especially children and old men," Abdul Hameed
Saleem from the Iraqi Red Crescent said.
On Friday (November 12) Iraqi Red Crescent distributed
food and aid supplies to Falluja refugees near to the city.
About 10,000 U.S. soldiers and Marines, backed by 2,000
Iraqi government troops, are engaged in the battle for
Iraq's most rebellious city, 50 km (32 miles) west of
Baghdad.
A spokeswoman for the Iraqi Red Crescent in Baghdad,
Firdoos al- Abadi, said that conditions in Falluja were
catastrophic.
At least 2200 families have fled Falluja in recent days
and are struggling to survive without enough water, food or
medicine in nearby towns and villages. Some families have
fled as far as Tikrit, about 150km north of Falluja.
The trucks are carrying shipments of foodstuff,
medicine and medical appliances.
