- Story Text: The mother of Michael and Ralf Schumacher died in a
hospital in Cologne, Germany, early on Sunday (April 20). The
brothers had travelled to their mother's hospital bedside on
Saturday after dominating qualifying for the San Marino
Formula One Grand Prix.
Elisabeth Schumacher, 55, had been in a coma in
Cologne following an emergency operation.
Ralf's spokesman Thomas Hofmann said on Sunday: "I can
confirm that Ralf's mother died this morning."
Hofmann added: "That's the only thing we can say, please
respect that this is a private matter."
The Schumachers' parents are divorced and, while father
Rolf occasionally comes to grands prix, Elisabeth has rarely
been sighted at the racetrack although she has followed her
sons' progress closely.
Despite the news, Formula one world champion Michael and
Ralf lined up for the San Marino Grand Prix which started
later on Sunday. Michael won the race for his first victory of
the season with Ralf back in fourth place.
After the race, and in agreement with the governing body
of motor sport the FIA, Michael received his trophy with no
traditional spraying of champagne taking place. He was also
able to leave without taking part in the post-race press
conference, with team boss Jean Todt taking his place.
