- Story Text: Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano, has kept
spitting fire after being jolted awake by a series of
earthquakes, but officials have urged calm saying towns are
safe from the red-hot lava streams.
As tongues of magma continued to snake down the
northern and southern slopes of Mount Etna on Monday (October
28), mechanical diggers steadily dug earth barricades to
direct the flow away from property in its path.
Linguaglossa, a popular ski town, whose name means big
tongue of lava is at least eight miles (12 kilometres) away
from the lava river. Local residents gathered in the central
piazza on Monday afternoon seemingly unconcerned by their
noisy neighbour.
"We're used to Etna, we live together, we're not afraid,"
said 70-year-old Antonio Lacche shrugging his shoulders.
"We're not afraid, we're just a bit sorry," said fellow
resident, 82-year-old Peppe Ricci.
Even the younger generation seemed unconcerned.
"It's not dangerous for people, it's dangerous for the
buildings and for the vineyards but not people," said
21-year-old Daniele Riccardi.
At Piano Provenzano, 1800 metres above sea level, above
the town of Linguaglossa, everyone has now been evacuated from
ski lodges and restaurants as the lava, 500 metres away,
slowly moves towards the buildings.
Chances are, emergency services say, that the ski lodges
at Piano Provenzano will not be there in the morning.
Civil protection officials estimated the two lava rivers
above Linguaglossa were up to 400 metres (yards) wide and six
metres (20 feet) high -- the height of a telegraph pole.
So far there have been no deaths or injuries but Italian
scientists warned on Monday the level of volcanic activity was
still very intense and a mushroom cloud of smoke hovered
ominously over the crater.
