- Story Text: Tens of thousands of Mexicans celebrate Independence Day.
Standing in front of tens of thousands of Mexicans who gathered at Constitution Plaza on Monday (Sept. 15), Mexican President Vicente Fox initiated the country's Independence Day celebrations with the traditional reenactment of "El Grito" (el GREE-toh) or "The Yell."
After ringing a bell, the President gave an energetic cry of "Viva, Mexico! Viva, our independence" as the flag-waving crowd cheered and fireworks lit up the sky.
This year, the president added "Viva compromise of all Mexicans," in an apparent call to political cooperation among the factions of his divided Congress.
"El Grito," a reenactment of Father Miguel Hidalgo's original call to join the Mexican uprising, is performed the night of the 15th in most town squares throughout Mexico. The 1810 cry is credited with initiating Mexico's 11-year War of Independence against Spain.
On Tuesday (Sept. 16), the country continued its celebrations with a massive military parade which the president observed from the balcony of the National Palace.
The aerial exhibition which was scheduled to accompany the parade was canceled at the last minute. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
