- Story Text: Spanish patrols continued in Diwaniah in southern
Iraq as Spain mourned the death of seven intelligence
agents killed in the country last Saturday.
Spanish troops continued to patrol the streets of
Diwaniah on Tuesday (December 2), as Spain mourned the
death of seven of its intelligence agents. The seven
diplomats, part of U.S-led coalition forces, were killed on
Saturday (November 29) when attackers south of Baghdad
ambushed their two unmarked vehicles with rocket-propelled
grenades and assault rifles.
Officials in Spain, where there was intense public
opposition to the U.S.-led war on Iraq the sending of
Spanish troops afterwards, said the killings would not
drive them from the country.
Iraqis living in the area now under the control of
Spanish troops, expressed condemnation for the attacks and
said they would help Spanish soldiers.
Sheikh Kadhim Al-Ziyadi, said: "We condemn the killing
of the Spaniards because they are our friends. They did us
a favour by toppling the regime of the dictator Saddam
Hussein. We condemn this cowardly operation and we do not
approve of it."
The majority shiite southern Iraq has been relatively
quiet compared to Baghdad and the region extending to the
north and the west, which have been subject to frequent
attacks on U.S.-led Coalition forces.
