- Story Text: Iraqi Shi'ite cleric, Sayed Muqtada al-Sadr says he
rejects attacks on any peaceful organisation
In an apparent reference to Monday's (October 27)
suicide bomb attacks on the headquarters of the
International Committee for the Red Cross and three Iraqi
police stations, Sayed Mouqtada al-Sadr said he rejected
any attacks on 'peaceful organisations' on Friday (October
31).
Speaking to hundreds of his followers gathered at
Friday prayers, in the Shi'ite holy city of Najaf,
Sadr denounced any sort of violence.
"We reject and denounce any sort of attack on peaceful
organisations or anything bloody and violent." Al-Sadr
said.
Al-sadr is one of Iraq's top Shi'ite clerics, whose
calls for parallel Iraqi government and army, have
triggered angry reactions from the Coalition troops on the
ground.
Dozens of Sadr's followers were detained by the
Coalition forces in Najaf and Kerbala, the country's second
Shi'ite holy city, over the last few weeks.
Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Kerbala,
after Friday prayers, to demand the resignation of the
local council after it failed to secure the release of
those detained by the Coalition.
