- Story Text: The Soviet World Chess Champion, Anatoly Karpov, received the 12,000 U.S. dollar (5,900 sterling) first prize in the Milan Grandmasters Championship in Milan on Sunday (14 September).
Karpov fought off a desperate attempt by the Hungarian, Lajos Portisch, who finished second. He won U.S. $6,000 (3,000 sterling).
Both received their prize money and medallions in a special ceremony.
Karpov forced a draw in the last of six games against the Hungarian to finish with a score of three and a half points to Portisch's two and half points.
When the last game began Karpov was ahead on points and the Hungarian knew that only a victory in that game would bring him level with the Soviet Champion.
However, Karpov withheld the initiative from Portisch after an English opening and after twenty one moves and three and a half hours play the Hungarian offered a draw which the Soviet Champion accepted.
