- Story Text: U.S. sailors win hearts and minds in Vietnam visit.
Nearly 30 years after the end of the Vietnam War,
American forces are finally won hearts and minds on
Thursday (November 20) in the Southeast Asian nation.
A day after the historic arrival of the American navy
frigate USS Vandegrift in Saigon port, dozens of its crew
deployed across the city to work on community and charity
projects.
But before they started their social work, they visited
the Vietnam Navy Technology School to play some volleyball.
For most of the sailors, the visit to Vietnam has been
an enlightening one.
For one, it was a kind of a homecoming.
"This is what I always dreamed of- to come back to
Vietnam, it's one of the countries that I have been wanting
to visit again.
I have been visiting a lot of countries like Japan and
Korea," said Doan Minh Hai Au, who was born in Vietnam in
1976 and emigrated to the United States when he was ten
years old.
"There has been a lot of change but most of the stuff I
saw was when I was only ten, so I don't remember a lot but
I do see a lot of change, a lot of bigger buildings and
greater economy," added Doan.
After an exciting game with the Vietnamese soldiers,
they headed to a nourishment centre for underprivileged
children.
They handed out gifts and toys to delighted children
there.
A group of six sailors volunteered to help paint the
"15 May School", home to over 230 street children, aged
from eight to 18.
The last time U.S. forces were in Saigon, now named
Ho Chi Minh City after the leader of a war the Americans
lost -- was an ignominious departure as north Vietnamese
troops encircled the southern capital.
"I had the chances in the past to do such things in
other countries. It leaves great memories behind with kids,
it's fun to be with kids and see their faces and how happy
it makes them for us to be here," said the ship barber
Michael Lellell.
Evoking comparisons with the American military's failed
efforts to woo popular support for its fight against
Vietnam's northern communists three decades ago, the
sailors on shore received a warm reception from locals.
