- Story Text: Human rights organisation Amnesty International has
presented a memorandum to the U.S. civil administrator in Iraq
alleging ill treatment of local people by coalition forces.
Following a two-month investigation, human rights
organisation Amnesty International handed a report and
recommendations to Iraq's Coalition Provisional Authority on
Wednesday (July 23).
Amnesty International spokesperson Kurt Goering said: "We
have received disturbing allegations of individuals who have
been forced to kneel or stand for long periods while in
detention, hooded with a sack over their head, sometimes with
a bright light on and subjected to extensive sleep
deprivation".
Speaking at a news conference in Baghdad on Wednesday
(July 23), Goering claimed that U.S. led forces may have used
extreme force to quell disorder on Iraqi streets.
"There have been a number of situations in which
demonstrators on the street or demonstrations inside prisons or
detention camps have been met with deadly force - in situations where
our information suggests that deadly force might not need to have
been used," Goering said.
There were also reports of troops shooting detainees, the
London-based human rights watchdog said.
