- Story Text: Zambian Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo has held his first
public mass since he returned to his Catholic duties. This
comes after his controversial marriage held by the leader of
the Moon Cult.
In what is Milingo's first public appearance after a
year of retreat, the archbishop addressed the congregation at
a church in Frosinone, a town 100 km from Rome. Prior to the
mass, he blessed the congregation and offered a prayer of
healing to a group of crying pilgrims.
Many of his followers gathered outside the church to
await his arrival.
"It represents the return of a great archbishop. I have
always followed him. When we found out that he had married, it
didn't seem like a normal thing. And today, now that he's
returned, it seems unreal. We are all overjoyed, we're all
here waiting for him," Anna Maria Ciottoli said.
"There is only good. There is no shadow of badness when
we are with him," said Angela Roma, another of Milingo's
followers.
Seventy-two-year-old Milingo shocked the Catholic Church
last year when he broke his vow of celibacy and married a
Korean woman, Maria Sung, in a ceremony organised by the
Reverend Sun Myung of Moon's Unification Church.
Milingo lived with Sung for four months in New York
before he turned up unexpectedly in Rome, repudiating their
marriage and saying he was going back to the Roman Catholic
fold.
The Vatican, which never recognised the marriage,
threatened Milingo with excommunication. He left Sung,
rejoined the Church and went into seclusion for a year before
returning to Rome.
The Vatican gave the former archbishop of Lusaka, Zambia,
approval to return to his duties earlier this month.
Milingo has had a long history of difficult relations
with some Vatican officials because of his unorthodox ways,
including tent revival-style masses in hotel ballrooms and
public exorcisms.
In a book published two months ago, Milingo said the Moon
Church had probably brainwashed him.
