- Story Text: Moscow cleans up and security is tightened a day
after a suicide bombing kills six people outside a hotel.
Muscovites and visiting foreigners are putting brave
face on a suicide bombing that killed six people outside a
hotel in central Moscow.
The deadly attack took place in front of the exclusive
National Hotel on Tuesday (December 9), just two days after
Russian voters handed President Vladimir Putin an even
tighter grip on power.
On Wednesday (December 10) people placed flowers near
the hotel facade and gazed at the pavement pockmarked from
the blast.
They looked and pointed up at the blood and flesh still
smeared onto the picture windows of the hotel.
It was the second suicide bombing in Russia in five
days and the second deadly bomb attack in the capital this
year. The first one in July, which killed 15 people at an
outdoor concert, was blamed on Chechen separatists.
Still, hardy businessmen staying at the National said
the violence had rattled them but not chased them away.
"Well, it was a little nerve-wracking, but I feel
pretty confident in the safety of the hotel," said American
businessman Marty Ritzen. "And the people that are our
hosts while we're here, they always take extra precautions
and make sure that we're all safe, so we're okay."
The newly-arrived Italian coach of Spartak Moscow
football club, Nevio Scala, said he was saddened by the
attack outside the hotel, where he is staying. "I hope in
the future we can live a little better," he said after
leaving the hotel.
Washers arrived to clean the windows of the hotel as
commuters hurried past the entrance and police were
checking cars in a effort to increase security.
