- Story Text: At least eight civilians from Russia and the Ukraine
have been kidnapped in the latest chapter of Iraq's ongoing
foreign hostage crisis.
Eight civilians from Russia and the Ukraine were the
latest foreigners kidnapped in Iraq.
Russia confirmed on Tuesday (April 13) that eight of
its nationals working for an energy company had been taken
hostage in Iraq.
Ukraine said later on Tuesday there were five
Ukrainians among a group of eight hostages whom Russia
earlier confirmed as being seized in Iraq and had
identified as Russian nationals.
The hostages, who were in Baghdad as employees of
energy company Interenergoservis to repair power stations,
were seized as they relaxed in the courtyard of their house
in the Iraqi capital.
Their abduction follows the release of seven Chinese
men kidnapped on Sunday (April 11) near the city of
Falluja.
Al Jazeera reported the Russians were kidnapped in
Baghdad after a shootout between their Iraqi guards and the
abductors.
Russia, which opposed U.S.-led military operations in
Iraq and has refused to contribute any forces to the
U.S.-led coalition there, has about 600 specialists working
in Iraq, mainly in the oil sector.
Three Japanese hostages were still missing on Tuesday.
