- Story Text: At least 25 Egyptians died and another 25 were injured
when a bus crashed into a truck outside Cairo.
The bus, filled with workers returning from the Sinai
resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, piled into a truck transporting
gravel that was trying to perform a u-turn on the road, 62 km
(39 miles) east of the capital.
Police, who had earlier given a death toll of 29, said 18
died immediately on impact and seven died later in hospital.
The crash sheared off the front of the bus, which was
covered in blood.
One survivor said the bus had not been speeding, but that
passengers were thrown forward on loosely fitted chairs.
"Everyone was thrown to the front of the bus as the chairs
came out of their sockets," said Ibrahim Gad, 31, speaking
from Heliopolis Hospital in northeast Cairo, adding that most
people were sleeping at the time of the crash.
Egypt has one of the worst traffic accident rates in the
world, due largely to speeding, reckless driving and bad road
conditions.
