- Story Text: Highlights of Tuesday's series of Haute Couture
Fall-Winter 2000 Collections set the fashion world fluttering
with excitement, especially Christian Lacroix's breath-taking
series of sumptuous gowns and Karl Lagerfeld's faithfulness to
the effortless elegance Chanel.
Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld bathed his Fall-Winter
2000 Haute Couture collection with a refined, effortless
elegance. Much of the collection carried references to
highlights from the legendary label like the classic Chanel
tailored suits worn by Jackie Kennedy and film star Romy
Schneider at the height of their fame. There were also
candy-coloured outfits which harked back to Chanel's
insouciant 1960s.
At a local swimming pool, models paraded on a sunken
podium surrounded by a precarious floating catwalk of
see-through perspex to a soundtrack of easy-listening tunes,
such as Burt Bacharachs 'The Look of Love.'
Chanel's take this season on the quintessential little
black dress featured outsized feathered tulle ruffs at the
shoulder and neck, or layers of billowing black chiffon.
Modern touches came in the way of acid-coloured metallic
cummerbunds slung low over the hips and towering zip-up
plastic boots, some featuring the labels instantly
recognisable two-tone heels and toes.
But, in a turnabout characteristic of the fickle world of
fashion, the pony-tailed Lagerfeld -- known in fashion circles
as 'the Emperor' -- left out the logos which flooded his
ready-to-wear collection just four months ago. The only items
featuring the houses interlocking Cs were
the black T-shirts worn by lifeguards posted around the pool,
just in case one of the models, or elegant guests, toppled
into the water.
Jaded fashion afficionados, who normally reserve their
applause for one or two show-stoppers, were privy to a
virtuoso haute couture collection later on Tuesday (July
11),when
Christian Lacroix presented a collection in which each gown
told a different story - sending the crowd into a frenzy of
appluase.
In a magical sort of fairytale atmosphere, a Snow Queen
stepped out in a rhinestone, black lurex and turquoise mink
bolero with oversize fox collar and cuffs over a turquoise
organza sheath dress. Two-tone biker jackets were reworked
into a patchwork frock coat and patterns clashed in a riot of
silk, sequins, dyed fur and luxurious embroidery.
The show was a rebuke to those who consider the
loss-making couture industry as nothing more than expensive
advertising for the cosmetics and accessories which account
for the bulk of the fashion industry's revenues.
Yvan Mispelaere, designing his first Haute Couture
collection for Feraud, named The Parisian as his muse. In a
house-issued press release, Mispalaere explained the time has
come to resuscitate the myth of the Parisian. Many like to
think of Feraud as a mark of optimistic luxury, a very French
style which speaks, both of femininity, and of frivolity.
The models, made up to look like very young girls,
promenaded to pop and then French accordian music against a
simplistic geometric white background. Light fabrics, lots of
ruffles and basic black and white designs on tights accounted
for the ultimately naive atmosphere of the show.
