- Story Text: Lithuanians board buses for London hoping to find
work.
One week after the Lithuania joined the EU, many are
turning towards the west for economic opportunity. With
borders to most of Europe now gone Lithuanians have right
to live and work almost anywhere in the EU. Many are headed
for Britain.
On Monday (May 10 ) buses and flights for London were
fully booked. While its not an exodus yet, many young
Lithuanians have decided that job opportunities in the rest
of Europe are too good to ignore.
"Today I can get ticket only for June 10", said one man
trying to buy a London ticket on Monday (May 10). "I am
going for work, like everybody else",
Experts say the highest chances of finding a job in
the "old EU" belong to doctors, nurses, medical technicians
and economics graduates. For Lithuanians a strong community
of countrymen already in London will help new arrivals
adjust.
"After May, 1, Lithuanian became more active travelling to
UK, according our investigating, because, during the last
10 years Lithuanians create strong minority in UK and the
same time English language became more useful for the
Lithuanians youth. And the last,
but no the least, UK can absorb lot free labour force."
But in countries like the UK, concerns are growing
that the unemployed in new member states may simply leave
their home countries in search of better unemployment
benefits.
Some experts have predicted a 20 percent rise in
immigration after May 1st when Lithuanian and nine other,
mainly Eastern European states joined the EU.
But most research shows such fears are probably overblown.
A study by the European Commission and the EU Foundation
for the Improvement in Living and Working Conditions,
showed that, even under conditions of full freedom of
movement, migration from all new Member States to all
current Member States would be about 1% of the working age
population of the new Member States - approximately
220,000 per year, in a Union of 450 million.
In similar surveys carried out within the EU, it has
been shown that intentions on migration are often much
higher than actual migration.
The study showed that the typical potential migrant from
the acceding countries is young, educated to tertiary
level, or still studying, and living as a single person
with no dependants.
