- Story Text: Italian police and military forces will be on high
alert following a bomb blast at the police station in Genoa on
Monday morning.
The blast occurred four days before the start of a G8
summit, when world leaders and hundreds of thousands of
anti-globalisation demonstrators will converge on the city.
At least 15,000 police and members of the armed forces
from the Navy and Airforce will be involved in what will be
one of Italy's largest security operations ever.
Surface-to-air missiles have been placed at the city's
Christopher Columbus Airport to thwart any possible air attack
against the summit, or against planes carrying world leaders.
A red zone of about four square kilometres will be off-limits
to all except participants, journalists, security forces and
residents.
The red zone will include the 17th Century Ducal palace
where the summit will take place. Manhole covers have been
sealed shut, and already on Sunday (July 15) evening, roads
were being closed as huge concrete slabs were lowered into
place.
Macdonalds, a regular target for anti-globalisation
demonstrators, has already erected wooden shields over their
shop-front windows.
