- Story Text: On June 7th, 1967, the third day of the 6-day War Jerusalem was reunited. Israeli Defence Forces, a Paratroop bataillon ad infantry companies, who had encircled the Old City the day before, stormed through St. Stephen's Gate (also called the Lion's Gate), fanned out towards the temple Mount with the Dome of the Rock and the E1 Aqsa Mosque and reached the Wailing Well. Another force had the day before advanced through Mandelbaum Gate, for 19 years the official border crossing point between Israel and Jordan, and on June 7th advanced into the narrow streets of the Old City from Herod's Gate and Damacus Gate. The gaping holes of the Notre Dame Hospice and Chapel, caused by Jordnaian artillery fire during the War of Independence and the 6-day War, bear witness to its position right on the border opposite New Gate and the street, which today is Paratroopers' Road was No-man's land. Except for the gaping holes of Notre Dame which only now is being repaired, a few mortar-holes in the wall of the building housing Barclay's DCO and the Jerusalem Municipality and the trenches and billets of the Jordanians on Ammunition Hill, which have been turned into a park, with flowers and trees growing around the bunkers and the barbed wire fences, apart from a memorial to the Israelis who fell in this gruesome battle for Jerusalem and another memorial for the Jordanian soldiers, built right by the Old City wall, apart from this nothing reminds the Jerusalemite or the visit or of the smoke, the shells, the blood of only 5 years ago. Women and children night place some flowers around the Arab memorial, a young officer in uniform might come back to Ammunition Hill and remember, children might look at the names of the paratroopers who fell here but the sound of birds has taken the Place of explosions and death. Jews and Arabs together are building a new Jerusalem, new housing schemes can be seen through the slits of the bunkers, Arabs are a matter of course in the street-picture of West Jerusalem as much as Jews go into Damascus gate
, as if it never was any different. Tourists can be seen anywhere, Christian pilgrims enter the gate of the Holy Sepulchre to visit the Tomb and Jews pray once again at the Western Wall, the only really holy place they revere, whilst tourists have to wait their turn when the Arabs are prying inside the Dome of the Rock. Once again Jerusalem has become a City of Peace, as its name wants to have it, a place where St. George's Street leads into the Street of Samuel the Prophet, where the peeling of the bells mingles with the call to prayer of the Muazzim of the Mosque and the afternoon prayer of the Jews at the Wall. This is the truth on June 7th,1972 - only 5 years later. Man wants it so!
