- Story Text: Amsterdam, the hippy haven of 1970 has become the young tourists' transfer point for this year. Taking advantage of new cheap charter and even cheaper student concession air fares, thousands of young Americans are expected to flock to the Dutch city this summer. Last year they were drawn by stories of drug freedom, but following clashes with police in August last year, the devoted drug taking hippie moved on, and apparently the major exodus has been to Copenhagen. This year the young American tourist, intent on seeing Europe as cheaply as possible, is making Amsterdam his first port of call. The Dutch government has set up cheap hostels, some of them costing no more than two gilders (about 50 cents) a night. Dam Square, the centre of last year's riots, no longer resembles a hippy commune. The war memorial is still a favourite haunt of long haired youths, but they are no longer allowed to sleep on the square. As a result most of the young people there today are "in transit" spending a few days in Amsterdam before moving on.
