- Story Text: A Dutch-Belgian consortium salvaging the wreck of a
ship off the coast of France said the leakage of oil has
stopped.
Belgian and Dutch salvage firms have been cutting up
the car carrier Tricolor on Tuesday (September 9, 2003), which
sank off the coast of France in December 2002 after it
collided with another ship at the eastern end of the
English Channel.
A Belgian local government official said on Monday
about 100 tonnes of oil had been leaking from the Tricolor
during the latest cutting operations.
He said there was no risk yet of beaches being polluted.
The consortium said in a statement six vessels have
been deployed to fight the spill.
It also said it had completed the fifth cut of the
Tricolor and that it will lift a third section of the car
carrier today.
The salvage team plans to divide the Tricolor into nine
sections to remove the wreck by October.
