- Story Text: Indonesia and Aceh rebels, the Free Aceh Movement
(GAM), expected to sign a formal peace accord in August.
In a sunny and summer warm Helsinki, the Indonesian
delegation arrived early on Monday (July 11, 2005) to take part
in the fifth round of peace talks with their Aceh
counterparts The Free Ache Movement (GAM).
Indonesian Communication and Information Minister,
Sofyan Djalil was optimistic that this would be the last
round of talks needed to be able to sign a final agreement
in August.
"Hopefully by this round we can solve all the
problems, and hopefully by August we can sign the final
MOU," he said.
The delegation was accompanied by three military
officials from the Indonesian military (TNI) lead by
Bambang Darmono, who according to Djalil was brought to
finalize the technical details of the security
arrangements of a lasting peace agreement.
The peace process has been undermined by a growing
chorus of dissent, with Indonesian lawmakers and military
officials denouncing efforts to negotiate with the rebels.
Both parties agreed to reopen the dialogue in the wake
of the December 26 tsunami, which killed more than 126,000
people in Aceh, in order to safeguard the relief and
reconstruction effort.
