- Story Text: Friday prayers in Sunni mosques in Baghdad have passed
off peacefully without any confrontation with the American
soldiers. But Imam of Abu Hanifa Mosque lashed out at the
American troops' conduct towards Iraqis, calling it flagrant
and tough.
U.S. soldiers on Friday (May 30) kept a close watch on
the Sunni Abu Hanifa mosque, in Baghdad's Al Azhamia area, the
last place deposed president Saddam Hussein was reported to
have been seen on April 9.
Iraqi Sunni Moslems performed their Friday prayers
peacefully, but their Imam demanded that American troops
provide stability in the country as soon as possible,
describing their conduct towards the Iraqi people as rough and
flagrant.
"What has been done by the occupation forces such as
arresting religious clerics, inspection of women by male
recruits not by female recruits and the flagrant violation of
houses through surprise inspections is an act similar to or
worse than that which was pursued by the former regime. We
hope that that the occupation authorities would quickly work
for providing stability and security," said Sheikh Moayed
al-Adami, Imam of Abu Hanifa Mosque.
Residents of Falluja town 60 km west of Baghdad also
performed Friday prayers peacefully.
Falluja has been the scene of several clashes with the
American soldiers. About 16 people were killed when they
(residents of Falluja) recently clashed with the American
troops.
