- Story Text: The Ghana Blackstars beat Guinea 2-1 in a World Cup qualifying soccer match at the Accra sports Stadium in Ghana on Sunday night (10 October). The half-time score was nil-nil.
SYNOPSIS: Guinea kicked off in the second half and immediately went into the attack. But within seconds, Ghana turned the tables and it was only a good piece of goal-keeping by Abdulayo Sylla that prevented Ghana form scoring the first goal of the match.
However Guinea returned to the attack and scored the opening goal when inside-right Yousouf Camara put his side ahead.
Ghana recovered to win the match 2-1 but it was victory earned the hard way, and the Guineans should still be fairly confident of getting through by winning the second leg of the match-at home in Conakry, Guinea, on October 31st. - by more than one goal.
In the words of Ebo Quanseh, sports reporter for the Ghanaian Times, the Guineans were superb in both attack and defence and were a delight to watch. The crowd responded to the Guinea goal by throwing missiles at Ghanaian officials, calling on them to make changes in the team. Bur before they could effect any change, Ghana's Dan Owusu scored the equaliser. That goal, converted in the 57th minute, brought some life into the Ghana Blackstars. But their attempts at attacking were weak and the visitors continued to put them under heavy pressure at times. Early in the game, the Guineans had Ghanaian keeper Ampeh diving full-length to save dangerous shots form Camara and ball player Ibrahim Keita.
Ghana's winning goal came eight minutes before time. It was scored by newcomer Opoku Afriyie.
