- Story Text: There are continued fears that lava spewing out from
Mount Etna in Sicily in Italy could reach the nearby
ski-resort of Linguaglossa.
Civil protection officials are playing a game of wait
and see with Europe's most active volcano.
The volcanic activity from Mount Etna has slowed somewhat
in the last few days but concerns have turned to a
lava flow some 5 kilometres away from the ski-resort of
Linguaglossa.
Since Wednesday (October 30) teams have been building a
massive earth barricade in the hope of directing the flow away
from a small river bed which could lead the molten rock
directly into the town. Experts surveying the lava hope the
flow will take the direction towards the larger Sciambro river
bed.
The flow itself has now slowed, moving along at some 5
metres per hour but in some sections it has reached 20 metres
in height, causing concern that the barrier of only 10 to 12
metres high may not be sufficient.
"This arm of lava flow has advanced over 200 metres
from yesterday it is still advancing, even if slowly but it
should channel itself into the main Sciambro river bed and if
it does, it will not create any problems for the village,"
said Fireman Luigi de Luca.
Now firefighters must wait and see whether the lava will
continue its path or make a right turn towards the river bed.
With only some 300 metres to go before the fiery load reaches
the earth barricade, officials can hope that their efforts
will be sufficient.
