- Story Text: U.S troops have beefed up their presence in the restive
Iraqi town of Falluja. They have detained burglars who they
say tried to rob one of the governmental factories.
More than 25 American humvees and tanks surrounded a
residential area in the centre of Falluja, 70 kilometres (45
miles) west of Baghdad on Monday (June 9).
The United States (U.S.) soldiers detained four men whom
they say were thieves who had broken into a governmental
factory. The soldiers pinned the men down on the ground, tied
their hands behind their backs and took them away.
The soldiers looked visibly tense as they searched the men
for weapons. Crowds of residents stood by, watching the
arrest, while other U.S. soldiers armed with machine guns took
positions around buildings.
The situation in Falluja remains tense after a spate of
attacks on U.S. soldiers.
Since Baghdad fell on April 9, 39 U.S. soldiers have been
killed by enemies and another 41 have been killed in
accidents, bringing total deaths in the Iraq campaign to 182.
Hostility to the United States has run high in the western
city since troops killed 15 townspeople in clashes there in
April. More than 3,000 soldiers and dozens of tanks went to
the area last week, doubling the U.S. troop presence there.
The area is currently under curfew. U.S. troops dropped
pamphlets on Friday (June 6) in the town, warning residents
that U.S. troops would "detain any curfew violators and anyone
working counter to the coalition and free people of Iraq."
The curfew starts from 11:00 pm to 04:00 am local time
(19:00-24:00 GMT).
