- Story Text: Manager Roberto Mancini says Inter need to improve a
lot to recover from 2-0 deficit to Milan in the Champions League
quarter-final first leg.
Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini insisted his side
still had a chance of making the last four of the Champions
League despite their 2-0 quarter-final, first-leg defeat by
city rivals AC Milan on Wednesday (April 6).
Goals in each half from Dutch defender Jaap Stam and
European Footballer of the Year Andriy Shevchenko gave
Milan a victory which leaves them as firm favourites to go
through and face PSV Eindhoven or Olympique Lyon in the
semi-finals.
Mancini said, however, that Inter should not be written
off: "It was an even match and I am a bit upset because we
lack attention and that changed the whole match," he told
reporters after the match.
Both Milan's goals came via headers from Andrea Pirlo
free kicks and Mancini had harsh words for how his defence
failed to cope with those crosses.
"We need to do something more - something mostly on the
offensive side. To go past this round we need to score
goals -- quite a lot of them. In football, we are always
learning. Our hope is that we can play better."
Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti was also wary of reading
too much into Wednesday's result: "The match developed as
we had predicted. Both teams tried to play and my team was
very brave in all the important moments. We scored two
beautiful goals and we were quite good with crosses," he
said.
The Milan coach added: "This was a good result but we
still have to play the return leg."
Ancelotti was particularly pleased that Shevchenko, who
was returning after six weeks out with a fractured cheekbone, got
back on target and with a header.
"It's important that he scored with a header and he
proved that the previous injury is now a thing of the
past."
