- Story Text: Bali court gives Corby second chance in drug trial.
A Bali court on Wednesday (July 20) gave Schapelle
Corby, a convicted Australian drug smuggler, a second
chance to call new witnesses who her lawyers said could
help her out of the 20-year jail sentence she is serving.
New key witnesses including an Australian police
officer and a prisoner serving on drug charges were unable
to attend the hearing of the 28-year old former beauty
therapist.
One witness, an Indonesian law professor from Jakarta's
University of Indonesia did appear at the hearing.
Corby's lawyer, Hotman Paris Hutapea, said they were
unable to bring key witnesses due to 'matters outside their
hands'.
"Even though the witnesses already exist, there is no
initiative from your government or people of Australia to
approach them. That is the biggest problem. All you know is
to attack the High Court or the Indonesian court but when
they need help where the hell are the Australians?"
The new hearing was scheduled for August 3.
"This case is already in the appeal process. So we will
forward the results to the High Court as a basis to make a
decision. My only duty is to transfer all testimonies to
them," said Judge Lintong Sirait.
Corby was sentenced to 20 years last April after being
found guilty of importing 4.1 kg (9 lb) of marijuana
through Bali's international airport.
