- Story Text: An uncertain economic outlook has overshadowed the
shiny new models at Frankfurt's annual International Motor
Show
Doors to the world's largest automobile exhibition
opened to the media for a second day on Wednesday
(September 10), one day before German Chancellor Gerhard
Schroeder officially opens the 60th Frankfurt International
Motor Show (IAA).
As photographers and camera crews scrambled for best
position around the new models on display, news emerged
that pretax profits of the luxury Audi unit of Europe's
biggest car maker Volkswagen would be lower this year.
Audi did however forecast higher earnings and sales
volumes in 2004.
According to the IAA, the show will include 125 world
premieres, 60 of which will be new developments by
automotive manufacturers, as well as 13 European premieres
and 35 German premieres.
But not everyone is happy with what is on display.
Albert Kobbe who is the Project Manager for Natural
Gas-Fuelled Cars, at the German Association For Gas And
Water Companies, said, "If I were to have a wish free
towards carmakers, it would be that they offer a larger
product range and different models (of natural fuel powered
cars). There are too few small cars. The Fiat Punto was
shown at the fair for the first time for example."
The 60th Frankfurt International Motor Show is open to
the public from September 11-21, 2003.
