- Story Text: Thousands of mourners have paid their last respects to the famous French film actor Jean Gabin, who died in Paris on Monday (15 November) at the age of 72.
SYNOPSIS: His career began in the 1930's. His success brought him fame and fortune, part of which he spent on a farm in Normandy which got him into trouble with French farmers in 1962 who were conducting a campaign against absentee landlords. Gabin filed a law suit against 12 farmers for trespassing on his land.
On Wednesday (17 November), an estimated three thousand mourners paid their last respects to Gabin, veteran of more than a hundred films. The son of a modest theatrical couple, he became what was described as the personification of a certain period of French Cinema. His gruff, gravel-voiced portrayal of gangsters and policemen put him alongside such Hollywood actors as Spencer Tracy, Humphrey Bogart, and Gary Cooper.
Gabin went to Hollywood in the United States to star in various American films, and interrupted his career in World War Two to serve in the Free French Forces of General De Gaulle.
Using his real name of Jean Moncorge, he served first on a merchant navy ship and later with the French Marines and as a tank commander.
Gabin was with the forces that liberated Paris in 1944, and fought in Germany until the end of the war when he resumed his acting career. After cremation at the Pere Lachaise cemetery, his ashes were to be sprinkled in the sea off Brittany from a French Naval vessel.
