- Story Text: As rescue workers continued to sift through the
wreckage of ground zero, memorial services were held in New
York City to honor the victims of the attack. One was for
securities broker Cantor Fitzgerald which lost 700 of 1,000
employees and another for employees of the World restaurant
atop tower one of the World Trade Center.
Thousands paid tribute in a solemn ceremony in Central
Park on Monday to the more than 700 employees of securities
broker Cantor Fitzgerald who were lost in the Sept. 11 attack
on the World Trade Center.
Cantor occupied floors 101 and 103-105 of 1 World Trade
Center along with sister firms eSpeed and TradeSpark. Together
they lost every New York employee -- 700 of roughly 1,000 --
who was in the office when hijacked airliners ripped into the
twin towers and brought them crashing to the ground.
More than 3 miles (5 kms) away from the site of the
ceremony, workers were still digging in the rubble of the twin
towers to find the remains of the 5,219 people listed as
missing and presumed dead. So far, authorities have confirmed
only 344 dead; 289 have been identified.
New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who has paid tribute
to slain city firefighters and police officers, also saluted
those he called "quiet heroes, who work hard, support their
families, and follow their dreams."
Before and after the private 90-minute service, friends
and family read from 6-foot banners inside two tents covered
with tributes and photographs. Many of the snapshots were of
young men and women.
In a letter, U.S. President George W. Bush offered
condolences to the company, the hardest hit of all the firms
in the World Trade Center.
"All Americans have suffered as a result of the tragedies
of Sept. 11," the letter said. "But your loss has been
particularly great."
The Boys Choir of Harlem sang "God Bless America" and
singer Judy Collins delivered a solo "America the Beautiful"
before the few thousand gathered under a giant tent.
A massive flag was draped over the back of a stage usually
reserved for summertime concerts.
Cantor's chairman and chief executive officer, Howard
Lutnick, vowed he would do whatever he could to help grieving
members of the Cantor "family."
Cantor resumed operations shortly after the attacks,
relying heavily on its London office.
Isabel Kennedy worked with many people at Cantor. She
said, "So many of these people was such good friends. They
welcomed me with open arms. Just a tragedy. I pray for all of
them and their families. But the ceremony was just
unbelievable. I can't even believe all the wakes and funerals
they've been too. There'll all still here. Its just
unbelievable."
Another attendee Mark Jaffe described the service as,
"Beautiful and profoundly sad and a testimony to a lot of
wonderful people who aren't with us and some wonderful people
who are."
At packed Cathedral of St. John the Divine, over a
thousand people paid tribute the workers of Windows on the
World, the elegant, world-famous, restaurant atop One World
Trade center.
New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani spoke at the interfaith
memorial service encouraging those in the cathedral not to
live in fear.
Dave Dolotkin used to work at Windows on the World, and
lost several friends. He said that the restaurant community in
New York is very tightly knit.
Dolotkin, who is now a chef at Patroon, said, "I worked
at Windows on the World for two and half years or so. So I
knew a lot of people that were up there."
Denis Kolditz also knew many people at Windows on the
World. She said, "I needed to come and share this. I'm in the
wine and spirits industry and I knew people at Windows. The
ripple effects are tremendous. The people that worked there
and the people in the other industries. It just blossoms. I
know so many people who have been affected, myself included
obviously. I needed to come here and share."
