- Story Text: ASEAN to steer clear of any public comment on
Myanmar's halting progress on its 'democracy roadmap.'
ASEAN leaders started arriving in the Laos capital
Vientiane on Saturday (November 27) where an advance copy
of the final communique showed that the 10-nation grouping
will not make any public comment on Myanmar's military
junta over its lack of progress towards democracy.
The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN)
closing statement makes no mention of Myanmar's widely
derided "roadmap to democracy", even though ASEAN secretary
general Ong Keng Yong had promised "a lot of hard"
questions on the subject.
Citing a mantra of non-interference in internal
national affairs, ASEAN has consistently ducked the issue
of Myanmar
democracy, even though Yangon's secretive generals are an
increasing embarrassment to ASEAN, one of the only
international clubs to let them in.
Myanmar's new Prime Minister Soe Win was among the
ASEAN leaders to arrive at Laos' newly refurbished Wattay
Airport on Saturday (November 27).
Win took power after the ouster of Khin Nyunt, who was
seen by many as a reformer, signalling a hardening of
Myanmar's position on democratic reforms.
Myanmar's Foreign Minister told journalists in Laos on
Friday that there would be no change in the government's
approach to the road map as a result of changes in the
leadership, after Khin Nyunt had been "allowed to retire".
"The answer is clear. There will be no change. Recent
changes will have no bearing on either the country's
domestic or foreign policy. Our objectives and priorities
will remain the same as before," Nyan Win told a news
conference.
