- Story Text: In Brussels, the Belgium team Anderlecht won the European Football Cup Winners Cup Final on Wednesday (5 May) when they thoroughly outclassed the British team West Ham in the second half.
Although Anderlecht ultimately deserved to become the first Belgium club to win a European competition, West Ham paved the way for their opponents 4-2 triumph with one crucial error.
The Londoners, playing with surprising confidence and enterprise appeared to have command after taking the lead with a goal in the 29th minute.
Then, three minutes before half time, a misjudged back pass by West Ham's Lampard left Day stranded, Ressel pushed the ball inside and Rensenbrink, after some hesitation placed it in the net.
After the retirement of Lampard, for West Ham at half time, Anderlecht began with new hope. Before West Ham had time to get back into stride Anderlecht had scored again.
In the 66th minute, West Ham equalised with a goal by Robson. But by now, they looked far from a winning combination.
Anderlecht saw their chance ad applied the pressure. First came a free kick and Rensenbrink took an easy goal.
Then a few minutes from the end of a memorable final, Rensenbrink again found Van der Elst with a long through pass and the little winger rounded to West Ham defenders before popping the ball into the net.
