- Story Text: The classical annual gondola regata was held at Murano with the participation of the most famous gondoleers of the city of, Venice.
On the day that this regata is held, the crowd takes active part in it inciting the different champions on to victory. (Each section of the city has its champion and those who dwell in each neighborhood do not spare their voices in cheering their representatives.) The crowd present this year was more numerous than usual, many foreigners in Italy on vacation were out to view the event.
The fire brigade had its hands full in keeping clear the tract where the race was to be held by directing strong jets of water on the craft which, maneuvered by enthusiasts would have damaged the outcome of the contest.
Nine champion gondoleers representing nine sections of the city participated in this event each manning a gondola propelled and directed by only one car. The run consists in a starting point, the gondolas reach a pole protruding from the water, they go round it and return to the starting point. The contest was heated and the various participants did all in their power to win.
The winner was Sergio Tagliapietra surnamed "Ciacci", second was Albino dei Rossi surnamed "Strigheta". The winner and the second best embraced at the end of the race.
