- Story Text: Four Italian men started the New Year off with a splash
in the eternal city of Rome, by diving off a bridge into its
river to mark a new year's tradition.
New Year's Day in Rome would not be right without the
quirky tradition which has taken place since 1946 when a group
of divers braved a chill wind to dive off a bridge into the
River Tiber.
A crowd of more than 1,000 people faced the cold to cheer
the four divers as they flung themselves off the 52 foot-high
(14 metres) Cavour Bridge on into the swirling muddy river
that winds through Rome.
Italian diver Giuseppe Palmulli, who also took part last
year's dive, said that the group dedicated their dive to world
peace.
"This year's dive is dedicated to those who want to maintain
peace and tranquillity world-wide, especially in the face of
this constant threat of war which is upsetting families and
people around the world," said Giuseppe Palmulli.
Crowds filled the bridge and banks of the river, while
canoeists along the river paused for the divers to jump into
the Tiber.
The divers not only demonstrated courage by stripping off
and taking a dip in the middle of winter, but also bravely
dove in, among floating debris, in the notoriously polluted
waters of the city river.
