- Story Text: Floods begin to threaten a string of towns along the
Elbe river in eastern Germany.
Floods have begun to threaten a string of towns
along the Elbe river in the eastern German states of Saxony
and Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday (March 20, 2005).
Because of record Alpine snowfall in recent weeks and
warmer weather in western Europe, the resulting thaw means
the situation remains tense.
In Barby, south of the state capital Magdeburg in the
state of Saxony-Anhalt, ferry traffic connecting the small
town on the Elbe river and places such as Zerbst, has been
halted after water levels climbed by 1.5 metres above the
normal 2 metres seen.
The level of the Elbe river in Magdeburg rose by 1
centimetre (.39 inches) within an hour on Sunday morning,
clearly visible on the electronic depth gauge showing the
latest level at 3.56 metres.
Magdeburg and other towns along the Elbe river have in
the past been hit by flooding which required fire brigades
and scores of volunteers to build walls of sandbags along
river banks or to pump water out of basements and ground
floor apartments in several towns.
