- Story Text: Iraqi Red Crescent team provides humanitarian aid in
Falluja.
The Iraqi Red Crescent team on Wednesday (December
15, 2004) entered Falluja to deliver humanitarian supplies for
the second time since a U.S. led offensive devastated the
city, but could not unload the humanitarian supplies due to
the apparent tension in the city.
The convoy consisted of four ambulances loaded with
foodstuff, drinking water and first-aid kits, witnesses
said.
The Red Crescent team drove around the city streets
asking people through loud speakers to show up, raising
their hands and carrying a white flag so that the team
could offer them some kind of assistance.
The Red Crescent vehicles drove through deserted
streets in Falluja, passing places were ruins of the
damaged buildings were being removed.
Meanwhile, a thick cloud of black smoke rose above the
city, 50 km west of Baghdad.
U.S. forces launched a major assault on Falluja more
than a month ago to drive out Iraqi insurgents and foreign
militants who had been in control of the city.
More than 200,000 civilians fled the city before the
assault, but some remained, and have complained of
shortages of food and other supplies.
The U.S. military says it has nearly finished sweeping
all buildings in the city for insurgents and weapons and
will then allow residents to return in stages.
Thousands of residents are living in camps outside
Falluja, and many have demanded to be allowed to return
home as soon as possible. But the extent of the devastation
in Falluja may spark further anger towards U.S. forces when
residents return.
The Iraqi Red Crescent was the first humanitarian
organisation to get into Falluja after the offensive,
sending a convoy into the city on November 22, and later
establishing an aid station. However, a week ago it pulled
out due to security concerns.
