Okay they will not be allowed to see how somebody is voting but they will be able to monitor the whole electoral process. - Story Text: The southern African nation of Zambia goes to the polls
this Thursday in a vote which will see the installation of the
country's third democratically elected leader since the former
colony gained independence from Britain in 1964.
A record breaking 11 candidates are in the race for the
presidency. Among the top three favourites to win is the
ruling MMD - Movement for Multi-Party Democracy's Levy
Mwanawasa.
A lawyer by training and an experienced political hand,
who has held the post of vice-president and now running with
the endorsement of the country's current president Frederick
Chiluba. Mwanawasa has ruled out the possibility of any vote
rigging to sway the ballot in his favour.
He says the ruling party has widespread support and is
assured of victory.
"The counting will be done at the polling stations. Before
the commencement of the poll the agents will be there. The
ballot boxes will be opened and be inspected to show that they
are empty. They will be sealed in the presence of the agents
and people will be coming to cast their votes in the presence
of the agents," said Mwanawasa.
Hot on Mwanawasa's heels in this race for the presidency
is Lieutenant General Christon Tembo.
The 57-year-old former army chief was until earlier this
year a member of the ruling MMD party. He formed his FDD party
after Chiluba expelled him from office because of political
differences between the two stemming out of Chilubas wish to
run for a third term in office.
He is confident that his party will win this week's poll.
"I think our chances are very, very good. And I am
confident that the people have realised that the FDD is the
only party which can bring hope to the people and of course
through the inevitable change which is coming," he said.
Another presidential hopeful is Anderson Mazoka of the
United Party for National Democracy (UPND).
The 58-year-old former soccer star is also respected in
business circles having headed the gold conglomerate Anglo for
more than 20 years. He believes his party has the solutions
Zambia needs.
"Where people are fairly confident that they want change
and you suppress that change you know what has happened in
other parts of the world. I hope that MMD will be intelligent
enough, having lost the confidence of the people, they
should walk out honourably. Any attempt on their part to rig
the election, I think will have very very adverse
consequences. I don't think that they would enjoy to rule this
country under that scenario," Mazoka said.
