- Story Text: The 75th Geneva International Motor Show has opened,
marking the Centenary of the first national motor show.
Known as one of the most representative and
world's biggest, the 75th Geneva International Motor Show
has opened its doors on Tuesday (March 1). More than 70
World and European cars are to be premiered. This year the
show will mark both the Centenary of the first national
motor show, held in 1905 and the 75th International Motor
Show to have been held since 1924.
This years theme is 'Geneva: 100 years of automotive
progress'.
Chairman of GM Europe, Fritz Henderson and President GM
Europe, Carl-Peter Forster have unveiled two new Opel
models to the world, including the new edition of the
Zafira. The interior has seven seats and a more flexible
layout, the design is more modern and there are improved
safety and comfort features.
Audi presented the new Audi RS 4 which combines the
latest high-performance motoring qualities offered by
Quattro GmbH in a thoroughbred sports saloon with supreme
everyday driving qualities. It is considered as being the
top-of-the-range model in the A4 series.
In addition, the RS 4 accelerates to 100km/h in 4.8
seconds and reaches 200km/h in 16.6 seconds. Top speed is
cut off electronically at 250km/h.
Toyota also benefited from the big spring show to
unveil their Toyota Aygo, a new core model and their first
entry into the urban compact segment of the market. This
model is strongly dedicated to the new, young customers.
The new Aygo will be first introduced in 10 European
cities, followed by the rest of the countries later.
Dynamic design, class-leading safety package with ABS
(anti-lock braking system) and EBD (Electronic Brake-force
Distribution), an all-new 1.0 litre, 3-cylinder petrol
engine, lightest engine available in the market,
consumption at 4.6L/100km are all the attractive features
that the Aygo offers.
Honda launched the new Honda FR-V 2.2i-CTDi, a compact
multipurpose vehicle of a new generation. Six individual
seats in 2 rows. 2.2 Litre Turbo common rail of 140 hp.
Renault has chosen the Motor show to take the wraps off
its latest concept car, Zoe, a diminutive upper-range urban
vehicle. Zoe innovation is its 'Pass' system which will
automatically adjust interior ambience to match individual
driver tastes. One click will modify the choice of music,
settings and overall atmosphere.
With the new C6 Citroen intends to stamp the marque's
authority on the world of luxury saloons. In order to
achieve this, Citroen has combined all the essential
ingredients and values in this limousine to ensure its
acceptance in the prestige sector.
Citroen also unveiled the little C1, a compact city car
(3.4 metres) designed to carry four people. It has all the
features expected of cars in this segment along with
economical engine, high standards in quality, roadholding
and latest safety technology.
Two vehicles are also making their world debut on the
Alfa Romeo stand, the Alfa Romeo 159 saloon and the Alfa
Romeo Brera coupe. The Alfa Romeo 159 will replace the 156
model and will be on the market in the summer. Its
proportions and volumetric ratios are well balanced and as a
result the 159 is a prestigious car that combines refined
Italian styling with Alfa Romeo sporty elegance.
The successor of the current sport coupe Alfa GTV is
the new Brera. The generously proportioned Alfa Brera (4.41
metres long and 1.83 metres wide) has a 2 plus 2 seats.
This model transforms the tradition spirit of the coupe
into a more exciting spirit of absolute sportiness. It will
be on the market at the end of 2005.
About 900 brands from around 30 countries are being
presented by 261 exhibitors on a gross surface area of
114,000m2 in various sections such as private motor cars,
special bodywork for motor cars and design, converted cars
and miscellaneous products and services.
The Motor show will open to the public on Thursday,
March 3, 2005.
