- Story Text: Although teams from several nations including East germany did well on the opening days of Britain's first world rowing championships, it was Turkey in the coxless fours who provided the big news - winning their heat in an all metal boat on Thursday (21 August).
It was the first time that such a boat had been entered by any country for a major international rowing championship, almost all crews still prefer wooden boats.
It was also a first ever victory for Turkey as a member of the International Rowing Federation.
They won their heat from Mexico and Switzerland. But these two teams were not regarded as front runners.
Metal boats have been used in some competitions. But -- it's reported -- never before has one featured so prominently.
One team the Turks still have to face in the competition is the United States, who also did well winning their heat in the eights.
The West Germans were in good form, winning their eights heat from Canada and Mexico.
