- Story Text: With the temperature well in the 90s Rome's tourist population crowded round the various fountains to cool off. Others crowded the beaches at Ostia, Rome's nearest seaside resort where they mingled with the few Romans who remained after the mass exodus for ??? of Ferragosto which is the Italian national bank holiday. The local population of nearly all main Italian cities have fled to the sea or mountains leaving deserted streets, shops and piazzas to the tourist invasion. The estimated number of Italians on holiday at present reaches a record of some 32 million, while the tourist population is in the region of 5 million. After a stormy July it seems everyone is earnestly taking advantage of the August heatwave.
