- Story Text: There are seven partners in the company which as built the new Lodge of Loiyengalani -- the Kenya Tourist Development Corporation and a group of six friends, all Italians. Only one of these Italians is in the tourist business, the others have invested as sleeping partners.
The Lodge is a GBP 50,000 project, and has 32 beds, arranged in 16 double rooms each with shower and lavatory. The double rooms themselves are in cottages, two to a cottage. The daily rate charged in Shs. 360 (about GBP 20 sterling) but this includes full board, taxi from the new airstrip and everything else.
The tourist attractions are fishing in the Lake, seeing the local tribes (El Molo, Turkana, Rendille and Samburu) and for those interested in geology and paleontology, rock hunting and fossil hunting.
The fishing boats are run by local Africans, with a supervisor from Lake Victoria. The fish in the lake are tilapia and the huge Nile perch, which often go up to 200 lbs. They are plentiful, and almost every visitor will catch at least one ???ig one. They are also good to eat; the Lodge has a cold room where visitors' fish can be kept until they depart.
The staff of the Lodge is wholly African, four specially trained senior employees from Nairobi and the rest from among the local Lake Rudolf people. There is no "season" at Lake Rudolf as this is a very arid climate. Fishing is good all the year round.
Since most of the owners of the Lodge are Italians, there is an Italian flavour about the food. The African head cook has been taught to cook the Italian cuisine, and Italian specialties are served daily.
The Lodge was started in August 1972, and will be finished very soon -- only last jobs remain to be done. However, it has been open for several months, and provided space for more than 150 scientists during the recent tidal eclipse of the sun. On the day of the eclipse itself, over 300 lunches were served at the Lodge -- for the scientists and many visitors from Nairobi.
Great interest has been shown in the Lodge by the tour companies, and once it has been completely finished and officially opened it is expected to be full most of the year round.
