- Story Text: Several hundred supporters of arrested former
Yugoslavian president Slobodan Milosevic have demonstrated
against his arraignment outside Belgrade's central prison.
Overwhelmingly middle-aged and elderly with the
hard-bitten faces of the old communist working class on whom
Milosevic rose to power in the 1980s, the demonstrators
chanted "Slobo, Slobo" and "to arrest Slobo is to arrest
all Serbs."
But the turnout was a far cry from the crowds the ousted
Yugoslav president could muster at the zenith of his power and
it was only the first rally on his behalf since his arrest on
Sunday for embezzlement.
The peaceful rally before the iron gates of the hilltop
prison triggered no counter-protest - most Serbs welcomed his
arrest but quickly returned to daily routine - and only four
policemen watched from a distance, looking bored.
Milosevic was unlikely to have heard the hoarse chants and
off-key singing of his traditional disciples because his cell,
while renovated to befit an ex-head of state, has no windows.
Earlier this week Serbian socialists threatened to begin
daily demonstrations if their leader was not released from
custody by Friday. Party president President Branislav Ivkovic
said the demonstrators would be ready for "all possible
scenarios".
