Then in the interior, we wanted to focus a lot on ergonomics and vision, so we wanted the person to sit really good, have a good overview of the car and to be able to see the corners of the car; so we lowered the hood, we moved the window waywards to see with a real open view. - Story Text: Over 50 new car models unveiled at opening of the
74th Geneva International Motor Show.
The 74th Geneva International Motor Show, one of the
world's biggest, opened its doors for a preview on Tuesday
(March 2, 2004) to reveal
over 50 new and exciting models from around the world.
One of the attractions on opening day was the unveiling
of the new Volvo YCC -- Your Concept Car -- made by an
all-women team.
In the YCC, the fenders have been brought into sight
and the traditional Volvo V on the bonnet section has been
inverted. It gives the car a sporty look and the driver
full command of the situation. Easy access to the car
interior was a top priority. Last but not least, the car
interior can be easily changeable. There are eight
exchangeable seat pad options to choose from.
"We wanted it both to have functional and a sportiness
image, so the exterior, which I designed, is supposed to
reflect both worlds. Then in the interior, we wanted to
focus a lot on ergonomics and vision, so we wanted the
person to sit really good, have a good overview of the car
and to be able to see the corners of the car; so we lowered
the hood, we moved the window waywards to see with a real
open view. Also this big door makes the big pillar be moved
rearwards, so you get a better vision over the shoulder as
well," YCC exterior designer Anna Rosen said.
Peugeot unveiled a new family car called the 407, to
succeed the 406 in the middle-to-upper range which is at
the hear of the French car-maker's territory. The 407,
Peugeot's new leisure saloon, also made its first public
appearance also on Tuesday morning.
The Rolls Royce 100EX was one of the other highlights
of the show. It is the first Centenary Experimental car to
be produced by Rolls Royce since BMW group became the
custodians of the brand in 1998. Based on a lightweight
aluminium space-frame, this open-top four-seat, two-door
drophead has been designed and produced to celebrate the
100-year anniversary of Rolls Royce in May 2004. The 100EX
is powered by a nine-litre naturally aspirated V16,
64-valve engine. There is no plan to produce it as a series
model.
"In terms of our investments in the engineering of the
car, this is really a tour de force, everything from its
amazing body shell,
amazing engine you are going to see in a second. These are
all the ideas that we have for the future so we starting to
lay the foundations for the next century for Rolls Royce
and we are very, very proud of it," said Rolls Royce
chairman Tony Gott.
The new Jaguar XK was also unveiled at the show. With
new exterior styling it gives the XK range a more
aggressive,
contemporary stance. The 2004 XK goes on sale in March
depending on markets.
The car show opens to the general public on Thursday
(March 4).
