- Story Text: Two giant pandas recently loaned to Moscow by Beijing
have been introduced to the Russian public for the first time.
The pair of giant pandas was sent temporarily to Moscow
as part of a cultural exchange programme between China and
Russia. They will stay through the summer and return to their
home zoo in Beijing in two months time.
Having live giant pandas is a rare treat for any zoo.
According to Moscow Zoo officials, renting a panda for a year
could cost up to one million US dollars.
Moscow Zoo's press secretary, Elena Mendosa said it was
not easy to accommodate their chinese guests. Some permanent
zoo residents had to vacate their homes for the next two
months.
"Jaguars used to live here, temporarily they moved out of
their flat to give this place to pandas. We would love to have
a lot of different rare animals, but because our space is very
limited, we can not do it, even though we would like to," said
Mendosa.
The two guests arrived with their Chinese attendants and
appear to have adapted well to the Moscow climate. The female
is 19 years old and was immediately nicknamed "the old girl".
The male is much younger - just four years old. The pandas are
not a pair and live in separate cages.
