- Story Text: About 3,000 peaceful demonstrators have marched through
Bonn where delegates from 180 countries are meeting to try to
save the Kyoto accord on global warming.
The Kyoto accord on global warming hung in the balance
on Saturday (July 21) with many delegates saying more talks in
October could be needed to resolve remaining differences.
Conference officials, already resigned to the United
States' rejection of any deal in advance, were to present a
compromise on reducing emissions of gases blamed for global
warming to overcome squabbling over details that has bogged
down talks.
Noisy demonstrations accompanied the Bonn summit. Angry
but peaceful demonstrators blocked a road near the conference
hotel. Riot police eventually dragged them off without major
incident. Others led a huge wooden life boat - symbolizing the
rescue of the Kyoto treaty - to the conference centre.
With Sunday's scheduled end of the four-day talks looming,
ministers were gearing up to argue through the night on a
series of highly technical issues still blocking a deal to put
the 1997 Kyoto Protocol into effect next year.
EU Environment Commissioner Margot Wallstrom said she
thinks Japan feels very strongly that its role here is crucial
and so it has been very constructive in discussions.
It will forever be connected to this process and to the
Kyoto Protocol so of course it is in the Japanese interest as
well to keep this alive and to be able to come to an agreement
here in Bonn, Wallstrom added.
At the summit of Group of Eight leaders in Genoa, Japanese
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said climate change was a
main focus of talks on Saturday and Tokyo was still intent on
trying to persuade the United States to join the deal.
