- Story Text: U.S. soldiers on patrol after retaking the eastern
town of Kut.
U.S. troops were on patrol and in position on Sunday
(April 11) in the eastern Iraqi city of Kut after a week of
clashes with Shi'ite militiamen.
U.S.-led troops retook control of the eastern Iraqi
town of Kut on Friday (April 9) after Ukrainian forces
withdrew from the city on Wednesday (April 7) and following
clashes with Shi'ite militiamen loyal to radical cleric
Moqtada al-Sadr.
U.S. soldiers were seen to take up positions in the
city 170 km (105 miles) southeast of Baghdad, with armoured
vehicles beside roads and streets.
Sadr's followers had launched an uprising earlier in
the week, battling U.S.-led forces in Shi'ite areas across
Iraq. One Ukrainian soldier was killed earlier in the week
during the fighting in Kut.
