- Story Text: The long-standing dispute between Jordan and the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) was resolved at the Seventh Arab summit Conference in Rabat on Monday (28 October). Arab leaders -- including King Hassan of Morocco, the Conference's host, President Anwar Sadat of Egypt, Algerian President Houari Boumedienne, King Feisal of Saudi Arabia, King Hussain of Jordan, President Ould Daddah of Mauritania, General Idi Amin of Uganda and yasser Arafat, leader of the PLO -- spent most of the four day conference discussing the question of official representation for the Palestinian people.
The outcome of the conciliatory meeting on the third day was announced by Moroccan Information Minister Ahmed Taibi Benhima. He told newsmen that the decision had been reached at a luncheon given by King Hassan and attended by Yasser Arafat and King Hussein. He described the meeting as "decisive in unfreezing the rigid positions of the first two days of the Conference", and added that "From now on the PLO will assume all responsibilities, both national and international" for the Palestinian refugees.
The Summit Conference, at which Palestine was the major issue, concluded on Tuesday (29 October). The Arab leaders were forced to extend their four-hour morning session into the afternoon -- thereby postponing the official public closing ceremonies.
SYNOPSIS: The Arab leaders' principal topic of discussion centred on the conflicting claims of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and Jordan over official representation of Palestinian affairs. The dispute was viewed as a major threat to the success of the Summit.
Jordan's King Hussein was urged by other leaders, including President Idi Amin of Uganda, to come to a settlement on the issue. King Feisal of Saudi Arabia and King Hassan added their voices to the call for a show of Arab unity.
